Andorra Living Lab Challenge: Sustainable and Digital Mobility

How can technology be used to create a context focused on active mobility and sustainable local transport?

Opportunities for Startups

  • 🚀 Digital Platforms: Develop apps and management systems to optimize public transport in areas with poor coverage, including groups such as teenagers and the elderly.
  • 🌍 Smart Infrastructure: IoT solutions to monitor and improve the use of greenways and safe paths, and last-mile goods transport.
  • 💰 Gamification and Incentives: Proposals based on blockchain or AI to reward sustainable journeys (e.g., bonuses for walking).
  • 🔗 Cultural and Commercial Integration: Digital tools to connect mobility with local commerce and cultural experiences.
  • 🤝 Collaboration and Governance: Decentralized platforms to coordinate public and private actors in the mobility of the future.

Territorial and Demographic Context
Andorra is a mountainous country with an area of 468 km² and an approximate population of 85,000 inhabitants, with a large influx of tourists exceeding 8 million visitors annually. This combination generates unique mobility challenges, especially in accessing rural areas, congestion in central valleys, and high dependence on private transport.

Specifics of Mobility in Andorra

  • High Level of Motorization: With more than 1.2 vehicles per inhabitant, Andorra has a strong dependence on private cars. This generates traffic jams, parking problems, and a high environmental impact.
  • Limited Public Transport: Although there are free inter-parish buses and services like the “Bus Express,” coverage does not always meet the needs of residents in more isolated areas.
  • Sustainable Mobility in Development: Greenways and safe paths for pedestrians and cyclists are promoted, but their integration into the transport network is still limited. There are also last-mile distribution companies.
  • Commitment to Sustainability: Andorra is working on the 2030 Agenda and climate neutrality, with initiatives such as the transition to electric mobility and the improvement of public transport.
